Zonta Club
of Sofia
In 1993, soon after the falling of the communist
regime, Zdravka Bozduganova, a music professor and at that time President
of ZONTA Club Hanau, Germany, formed ZONTA Club SOFIA, which became one of
the first working NGOs in Bulgaria. In the early years of democracy and
through ZONTA, the first charity aids arrived in Bulgaria - children
clothes, food, children toys and medical supplies.
ZONTA Club Sofia was
chartered and became a member of ZONTA International in 1995.
Since
then, in compliance with the goals of ZONTA International, the club has
been working for advancing the status of women in Bulgaria, promoting the
idea of ZONTA and took active part in forming a contemporary civil society
in Bulgaria. Throughout the years of transition, the club was actively
involved in three main courses:
• Service and advocacy of underprivileged people;
• Support of Bulgarian art and young Bulgarian talents;
• Promoting the idea of ZONTA
However, the most large-scale project of ZONTA Club
Sofia is the chartering of ZONTA Clubs in 8 Bulgarian cities - Pleven,
Stara Zagora, Bourgas,
Blagoevgrad, Tyrnovo, Varna, Plovdiv and Skopje, Macedonia.
During the last 12 years, ZONTA CLUB Sofia succeeded
in establishing itself as a reliable and desired partner and became a
significant factor in the social life of SOFIA. Proof of the hard work and
persistence is the support the club receives for all its initiatives and
projects by state institutions, agencies, non government organizations,
the business sector, opinion leaders like: the first lady of the Republic
of Bulgaria Mrs Zorka Pyrvanova, the Mayor of Sofia Mr. Boiko Borisov, the
former minister of Youth and Sport Mr. Vassil Ivanov – Lucciano, the
Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Justice,
the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, the State agency for child
protection, Gender, Centre Nadia, the National commission for fighting
anti-social behaviour of juvenile and underaged, the Press centre unit of
the Ministry of Interior, the Press
centre unit of National service
for combating organized crime and many others.
At the District Conference in Yverdon, Switzerland in
2005, ZONTA Club Sofia was awarded the privilege to host the next District
forum in September 2007 in Sofia. The happening of this conference in
Sofia is an honour not only for the club but for the Bulgarian ZONTA
movement and our city as an such a significant forum is organized for the
first time in Eastern Europe.
